DIY THURSDAY: DIY Cake Topper

I am all about a little DIY project that costs close to nothing and adds a personal touch to your wedding all at the same time. I mean who isn't really? So today I'm here to share with you probably one of my favorite DIYs that I did for a friend's wedding.

Sarah and Joe are two of our close friends finally got married and gave us pretty much complete freedom in regards to the design of their big day. But anyway, Sarah is a singer/guitarist who plays pretty frequently around Savannah. **Check out her gig schedule here!! And Joe is in the military and works on and flies helicopters. For their cake topper they wanted to do something fun so we came up with the idea to do a guitar for her and a helicopter for him. And what better way to find the perfect cake topper than to make it ourselves?

TOTAL COST: $5.98 + spray paint

We basically have an infinite stock of gold spray paint at our shop so I didn't have to spend a dime on that. Honestly the hardest part of this DIY was finding the guitar. An unsuccessful trip to Michael's, then Dollar Tree led me to begrudgingly head over to Toys R Us. Which if you are not a kid I feel like is an extremely overwhelming experience. Because I think they have like every single toy that has ever been made. Ever... but really I mean like ever ever ever. And the aisles are packed with toys, so many toys. I looked up and down and up and down and up and down every aisle thinking the best bet was a Barbie with a guitar. No luck. Got to the back of the store (now in toddler land) and finally gave in and asked someone. He looked at me funny but then I started asking for like you know... what about a doll that is a rockstar? Maybe a boy rockstar? A toy like that? Anything? And voile, he was able to help direct me to a Beatrix Girls rockstar doll. I laughed pretty hard when I saw it and said perfect. A fairy shaped guitar, I will take it. Yup, Toys R Us guy. It's perfect.

So... for you and your groom all you have to do is think about things you love and then find the mini version toy to make your cake topper. For me it would probably have to be a dinosaur, a cat or a snowboard. For Adrienna bets are on a cat, a bow or a beading knit type thingy. Nic, the kangaroo, would probably opt for a kangaroo, a bottle of Jim Beam or salsa dancing shoes. The possibilities really are endless because well, like I said above, Toys R Us has every toy you have ever heard of. So pick up your favorite toy, your favorite color of spray paint and you're done. DIY cake topper.

Huge congratulations to Sarah & Joe who just got back from their honeymoon on Monday! We could not be more excited for the happy couple and huge thank you for letting us have so much freedom with the designing of your wedding!! It was so absolutely fun and exciting!!!!!! We love ya'll!!

THOUGHTS THURSDAY: 4 Reasons You Should Have a Photobooth

So first off before I start anything I need to just say thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the incredible vendors who were involved in our 1-YEAR Anniversary! We are so overwhelmed with gratitude for all the vendors who have supported us throughout our first year open and are so very grateful for all of them who we love to work with so much!!! ****Dreamweaver Photography has a few different styles of photobooths but this one in particular was a modern looking free-standing photobooth that can be used in front of whatever backdrop you want! It prints out 2 strips for guests to take. I absolutely am obsessed with it because of the fact you don't have to have a boring backdrop and if you know me you know we love getting creative!!!! PROOF IS BELOW. And go...

1. They are more fun than awkward conversations and small talk. Let's be honest here... I'm sure the majority of us have been to a wedding where we barely knew anybody and the small talk was kind of hurting our heart a little. What better way to break the ice at cocktail hour than have a photobooth for guests to laugh and be awkward in a completely socially acceptable manner. 

2. We live in the age of selfies. And who doesn't love a good selfie. I mean even those people shaking their head and saying no they don't like selfies... I just am not buying it.  

3. It's like Halloween on steroids. You get to dress up and change your look more times in 10 minutes then you do the whole year. One minute you're a dinosaur, the next an owl, the next a ridiculously posh looking male with a fantastic mustache. It's like being a kid all over again and I love it. 

4. My top reason for having a photobooth is the fact that your photographer, no matter how good, will probably never capture every single guest at your wedding. Plus I mean it's not really like you want them to anyway... well maybe. But probably not. Who wants a bunch of portraits of every single guest hanging out with each other? I mean maybe you do but I'm just going to assume you don't. And from my experience looking through all the pictures that photographers send us after the wedding it is definitely not the norm for them to do that. That being said... with a photobooth your guests get the chance to get their picture taken. And then after the wedding you can share all those crazy pictures and embarrass the heck out of everyone in a really fun way. And your wedding guests will be talking about that wedding and how fun it was for forever. But that wedding where they danced awkwardly in the light that was never dimmed enough? Not going to remember it. Or maybe they will remember how awkward they were and they'll just try and pretend they don't remember. Or maybe that is just me? Awkward ginger syndrome or something. Not sure.

DIY THURSDAY: Yarn Air Plant Balls

It is no lie that sometimes I have moments of antsyness when I need to get off the computer, stop replying to e-mails and just sit back and craft. Mindless crafting for hours... and hours... and more hours. This kind of crafting keeps me sane. So when my best friend Rachel got engaged I told her that she better be giving me some craft projects for days when I just can't be bothered to reply to e-mails. {Disclaimer: these days are very few and don't happen often so if you are my wedding planning client reading this do not fret. I still will aim to reply to all e-mails within 48 hours.} That being said, there are still some days I have to just take a break. And so when I ran across these adorable yarn air plant balls seen on Octopus Garden's instagram I asked Rachel to please let me make these for her wedding and thank goodness she said yes. Level of difficulty is yet to be determined but here is a little guide for this DIY project I will be spending many hours to complete. Thank you Rachel for entrusting me with crafting madness for your big day!!!!!

DIY THURSDAY: Calligraphy Chargers

A charger is an easy way to glam up a place setting or signify a special setting for the bride and groom, bridal party or family members. For those of you with pretty cursive this is an inexpensive and easy DIY as well as a way to customize and put a personal touch on the little details. How about writing the lyrics out to your love song? Favorite poem? Wedding vows? Love letter? A $1 decorative plate from the Dollar Tree plus spray paint in your colors plus a calligraphy pen in a metallic color and some time and you have a pretty charger.

SIMPLY WED: Kristina + Jarrod {pt. 1} The Details

I know I always say that the wedding I am sharing is my favorite, but this really is one of my favorites for the main reason that it was filled with handmade details! And I really feel like the handmade/homemade details are what gives an event life and gives an event a story. This wedding was filled with lots + lots of stories of all the prep that went into this wedding that I'm sure this couple will remember forever. First off, the cookie bar with homemade cookies by the bride and bridesmaids... Second, the hundreds of handmade origami cranes which were hung from the rafters and were placed all over the tables... Third, the Godfather origami crane mobile one of the bridesmaids made [seriously the most amazing thing ever] that we almost couldn't use because of restrictions on which rafters we could hang things from but Adrienna + I got crafty the night before the wedding and made that fabric backdrop arch for the sweetheart table... Fourth, the homemade s'mores box made by the groom himself... It doesn't end there though, but those are some of my absolute favorites!!! SIMPLY PUBLISHED: The Knotty Bride

The Knotty Bride is by far the funniest of all the wedding blogs. I would highly suggest adding this to your reading list of blogs if you don't read it already. The author is hysterical and always writes the best most entertaining posts while featuring some awesome weddings and styled shoots.. oh and boudoir. I'm thankful for grace and blessings. I've been so overwhelmingly blessed this year, and I thank God for everything I've been given. I can't believe at 22 I'm able to live out my dream of having a boutique, it all feels surreal still. I'm thankful for being surrounded by family and friends who support me and this business adventure. I'm thankful for being able to have gone to SCAD, which turned my life upside down in the most perfect way.  My kittys, for proving hours of entertainment and puurs and kisses. Nicole, for being crazy enough to open a bridal store with me. She has endless ideas that never cease to amaze me, and she pushes me to be better every day. I can't image any other person to be doing this with. Our new interns, for being so freaking fabulous. And for Woody, my amazing boyfriend, for constantly being there, even when I'm annoying, whiney and should be ignored.

So excited that we were featured in Savannah Magazine and on Savannah Magazine's website!!!! For the shoot we contributed a large handpainted DIY backdrop for their food table! Adrienna + I were inspired by southwestern prints + wanted to do something crazy or funky. Good thing I had turkey feathers lying around the house... SIMPLY INSPIRATION: Personalized Wedding Details

I stumbled across this post last night on Yellow Brick Home while looking at some of my favorite interior design blogs (I randomly got on this intense kick to style my entire house last night... true story--go check out my obnoxious Instagram feed - anicole rene) and anyway, it just made me feel really good about everything I did yesterday. I have really challenged myself to get creative by stepping away from the laptop, stepping away from Pinterest, stepping away from wedding blogs, and by just immersing myself in real life. Sounds so ridiculous when you put it that way, but let me tell you what I have never been more inspired. Just spending an hour dilly dallying in Michael's and I came up with several DIY projects for our next styled shoot that I can honestly say I have not seen all over the Internet already. And ya know what, it is a little intimidating putting my ideas out there. What if people don't like them? What if the photographer doesn't like them? What if!? What if!?!! WHAT IF?!!? Then I remembered something I learned at Making Things Happen (I swear I probably will not ever stop mentioning this conference in my posts because it was just that incredible). But what I learned was the answer to What if!? And that answer, is "So what?!" So what is the worst that can happen!? And if you stop and think about what is the worse that can possibly happen the answer is 98% of the time not good enough to not try.

Ya know, this is so totally random + completely crazy that this thought just popped up in my head... but this post I am writing totally reminds me of a quote I used to love and use all the time. See, in my college days I was in this pretty little sorority, Alpha Phi dizzzle shizzle. And this may be top secret information so I apologize in advance if I am giving away something I shouldn't be, but anyway we used to have to write our favorite quotes for the new pledges every year. And my favorite quote? "Let your freak flag fly" by Celia Hodes on Weeds. Not deep words of wisdom or anything, but definitely relates to this post because in all honesty it's a pretty sweet quote. And let's be real, everyone is unique and different and I think if we were more willing to show that off then the world would be a funner place.

Now back to weddings, because this is a wedding blog after all. I have started challenging my clients to let me get to know them better. And let me tell you what, they are awesome. Seriously awesome. Because they have been so open to doing this and so open to going along with me on this that it has just made my heart light up with excitement. This is the good stuff. Because me getting to know that stuff translates into me helping them make a superiorly personalized event. And let me tell you what, me challenging them is in turn challenging me to really get creative. Here are some ways I love that (has been done or else there wouldn't be pictures of it) but still, some ways I love that incorporate the special couple in a fun way.

This DIY bohemian bunting seen on Green Wedding Shoes by Wednesday screams personalization to me with the old photographs, letters, postcards, and the different elements. This customized bunting is so simple and so easy to make and I bet you could find most of the supplies lying around your house somewhere so the cost could potentially be no more than $5-10. Just find some old photographs of your parents or your parent's parents, maybe some postcards of some places you and your fiance traveled to, maybe an old handkerchief from your sorority (haaaaha) or your grandma, or just random knick-knacks. You'd be surprised what you can find in the attic and garage when you really dig through. I remember my grandma always having these handmade crocheted squares she used to put hot pots on... I mean even something like that could be used. Anyway, the possibilities are endless and personal.

Alright I am guessing if I didn't have your attention before then I definitely do now!? I mean this neon pink giraffe by FB Studio VT I would assume has gotten your attention? At least it should. Anyway, here's another DIY idea that I love. And I have about 7 spray painted plastic animals roaming around my house to prove it. Say your first date was to the zoo? Or maybe your favorite vacation was a safari?! See where I'm going with this? All you have to do is pull some inspiration from your love story and voila! Personalized wedding details on every table that get your guests talking and wondering what was the inspiration behind this little guy? And then voila! Am I even spelling voila right? Hmm, but voila! Now you have guests talking, which is another plus and makes your wedding less stuffy, and they're talking about the inspiration and then they're talking to each other and learning about your first date at the zoo five years earlier.

Alright I am slightly obsessed with these little guys. How amazing are these cow skull escort cards!? Another DIY from Green Wedding Shoes. I'm not saying go out and make cow skull escort cards, but I think escort cards are another little way to customize your wedding. And if you can get super creative you can kill two birds with one stone by having the escort cards double as favors, because who doesn't want to bring one of these home and put it on their fridge or desk or whatever. I know I do... And I think these are awesome because the bride and groom are from Texas and wanted something incorporated in their wedding to share that little bit of information with guests. It's the unexpected little details that add a little flair to your wedding and make things a little more personal.

The moral of the story here? I like pretty weddings. I love personalized weddings and really weird things. And I know I probably sound like a broken record at this point but this blog is my little place to share things that I get excited about. And these are the kinds of things I get excited about. And the moral of that story is? Let your freak flag fly because you today you are you that is truer than true there is no one alive who is youer than you.

{Bright Idea Thursday} SIMPLY DIY: Gold Animals

I know this idea is probably going to be a little out there for some of you, but that's just my style. And I know you might even be thinking this is not a bright idea, but instead this is a really dumb silly idea for kids. But if you haven't already caught on to me then let me tell you I like love things that aren't what everyone is doing. And if I can do something that is going to make people go really? You did that? Then I am succeeding at being Nicole. And if I can do something that makes people go I cannot believe you did that/bought that/whatever but now I really want to do it/buy it too. Then I am seriously succeeding at being Nicole. And if you are wondering if I have any of these in my house the answer is yes, yes I do and if you are wondering if I felt silly spending $15 on toy dinosaurs the answer is nope, but probably only because my friend Rachel was there... and embarrassing her made it all worth it. So, I think this is a totally fun way to add some gold + some quirkiness to your wedding decor. And I think it's just something fun for guests to talk about. Plus afterwards why not keep them as a keepsake and put them in your home? If my friend had gold toy animals all over her wedding then you can bet I would be hoarding those. And then I'd most likely go home + hide them in the most random places so when my boyfriend opens up his underwear drawer he will be like seriously Nicole? Seriously I cannot believe you did this. But seriously thanks for making me forget to put on underwear because I got too distracted at the toy dinosaur in my underwear drawer. And to be completely honest you can bet your pretty dollar that I will have gold animals at my wedding. Preferably dinosaurs although maybe it would make more sense if they were desert animals like snakes and coyotes since obviously my wedding will be in the desert. Alright, enjoy this pretty little inspiration filled with pretty little gold animals. Happy Thursday ya'll. Oh + before I end my mindless rambling... this Sunday I am getting together with some of the most awesome vendors in town who totally love crazy unique stuff like this + together we have put together basically a really awesome inspiration shoot. {Bright Idea Thursday} SIMPLY DIY: Table Numbers

I hope everyone had a fabulous Christmas! I had every intention of posting 5 more inspiration boards before Christmas but truth be told I got way too busy with holiday celebrations and moving! So back to the grind now with regular blog posts!! I thought what better way to get back into the regular blogging schedule then with a DIY idea that I absolutely adore. It's also kind of a coincidence because this evening I met with one of our 2013 couples and the bride was telling me how each table will have a picture of a different historic Savannah square in it. I love the idea of having table numbers/markers that don't necessarily use numbers... why not play up your tables with names of historic squares of the town you're getting married in, or you + your fiance's favorite bands or movies, or places you've been together, or why not have a family member or friend draw your table numbers like those psychedelic table numbers by the terrariums drawn by the father of the bride?? There are endless possibilities of how you can make your reception decor more personalized and unique without spending a lot of money and I think this is the perfect way.
